About this deal

By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. While on one hand, I appreciated the trimming of the fat (my complaints about the book included one about how it meandered and wallowed in fluff), but on the other hand, lots of story elements get condensed or simplified, characters are omitted (what's the point of mentioning Scottie and Shelby if you barely see them? I've recently read Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation, a gorgeously redone version of the original novel by Octavia E. We find that the IT department has been limiting the flow of information and this leads to a huge cover-up about the true function of the silos and who created them.

The Silo 1 staff go to awaken Thurman per protocol, but mistakenly awake Donald instead due to interference by Thurman's daughter Anna. I caught up quickly, but I still felt maybe I was missing on some points of the story that I would have known about had I read the original books first. Silo 17's machine requires more fuel than is available, so Juliette and the other survivors try to walk to Seed over the surface. Victor convinced Thurman and Erskine to implement Operation Fifty: destroy human civilization before weaponized nanobots did so, leaving the occupants of the Silos as the only surviving humans while Earth's surface is thoroughly cleansed by benign nanobots. He also tells her about IT's secrets, and relates that after she left, Silo 18's Mechanical staff launched a rebellion against Bernard. Those sent outdoors invariably clean the sensors as instructed, but die within minutes, reaffirming to the Silo residents that the outside is uninhabitable. Encouraged by this sight, he happily cleans the Silo's external sensors and then explores the environment. I think that a first-time reader of the series may have a hard time following the story; it accelerated quite quickly, clearly with the intention of focusing on Juliette and not so much the first couple of Wool books with Holston, Marnes as main characters.

There isn't enough text or dialogue - it would probably make little sense to anyone unfamiliar with the story. The Silos are enshrouded by an artificial veil of toxic dust, but beyond them, there is breathable air, clean water, and a thriving ecosystem.

Some characters in some places were so beautifully drawn, so detailed that they looked almost like photographs, but most of the time the art was dark and confusing. It never clearly shows character faces and certain characters I couldn't recognize unless the name was mentioned. Three years ago, Holston's wife Allison became convinced that the outside world was livable and that the IT department, which runs the external sensors, had deceived the rest of the Silo. The series has also been adapted as a comic book and an Apple TV+ television series, and has an extensive fanfiction following. Bernard is elevated to mayor and eventually replaces Juliette with his own choice for sheriff, Peter Billings. When Juliette and the survivors arrive at Seed, they find it is a sprawling bunker replete with food, materials, and plant seeds, everything needed to rebuild civilization. Following Holston's death, Mayor Jahns and Deputy Marnes embark on a trip to the Mechanical zone, the Silo's lowest level, to interview Juliette, their top candidate for sheriff.
